October 10, 2003, Newsletter Issue #43: Tasty Tomatoes and Cancer Fighters

Tip of the Week

Tomatoes are great for you in any shape or form. Nothing beats a nice juicy raw tomatoe but if that is not your style. Processed tomatoes (Canned, paste, stewed, sauce) are just as good for you and the heating process may in fact make the lycopene more easily absorbed into the bloodstream. After absorption, the lycopene is deposited in the liver, lungs, colon, prostate gland, and skin where it gets to work chasing down the free radicals responsible for cell damage.

Lycopene can be found in other fruits with red or pink flesh (watermelon, guava, and pink grapefruit), but only tomato products have been proven effective in preventing cancer. Try adding cooked tomatoes to your diet, but remember to avoid sauces or tomato products with a lot of sugar and salt. Ketchup is one of the worst offenders - watch your use for this popular condiment.
