September 5, 2003, Newsletter Issue #38: Kitchen Clean Up

Tip of the Week

To keep your kitchen free of harmful bacteria (which can cause food-borne illnesses), follow these rules:

*Wash your hands with warm soap and water for at least 15 seconds before handling foods.

*Disinfect sponges by running them through the dishwasher or moistening and microwaving them for one minute.

*Wash preparation tools as you use them, especially if you are preparing raw meats. Cross-contamination can lead to bacterial infections, especially when raw meats and their juices come into contact with produce.

*Wash produce. All produce-organic and non-organic-should be washed before eating to remove pesticides, dirt, and other bacteria.
