Donīt leave the produce section without checking out the grapefruits. Studies at the University of Florida found that eating one and a half cups of grapefruit sections a day lowered cholesterol levels by more than 7 percent in two months. Grapefruits are rich in a fiber called pectin that binds with dietary fat and cholesterol, then escorts them out of your body before they can be absorbed into your blood stream.

Another way to get more pectin in youir diet is to eat more carrots. Researchers have found eating two carrots a day can lower cholesterol 10 to 20 percent.
