May 19, 2006, Newsletter Issue #63: Natural Peanut Butter or Not?

Tip of the Week

Findings have shown that "natural" peanut butters may have no trans fat, but that the supermarket brands which contain partially hydrogenated oils actually have only an insignificant amount of trans fat. All peanut butter, by law, must contain at least 90% peanuts. Some brand names have "partially hydrogenated oil" on the list of ingredient right behind PEANUTS. This oil is used to keep the peanut butter oils from separating, which most of us prefer.

Tests have shown that supermarket brands actually contain 0.05 grams or less trans fat per tablespoon. This measure is at least 10 times below the cutoff point where something can be declared trans fat-free. The measure means you would have to eat 40 tablespoons of peanut butter to get 1 gram of trans fat.
