June 8, 2007, Newsletter Issue #116: Dysmenorrhea Relief

Tip of the Week

This is discomfort at the beginning of menstrual flow each month.

Herbal teas of aniseed, caraway, chamomile, fennel, melissa, or parsley can help.

Warm baths (not hot) containing a few drops of an essential oil such as cypress, calendula or chamomile are good, as are poultices of the above applied to the stomach area.

Simple commercial pain relievers may help relieve the cramps and other discomfort.

Lying in a darkened room with a hot-water bottle on the stomach can also give some relief.

A glass of port or brandy with hot water and honey can help.

Eating foods rich in calcium and magnesium should be eaten before a period begins as they are needed for muscle relaxation.
