Ayurveda (pronounced I-your-vey-da) is the traditional medical system of India and is still popular there today. It is often considered the oldest medical system in the world. Ayurveda has been around at least 5,000 years. Ayurveda, literally means "the science of life". The word is derived from the Sanskrit ´ayu´ meaning "life" and ´veda´ meaning "knowledge.

In addition to using herbs and other therapeutic techniques to restore equilibruim, Ayurvedic practitioners aim to adjust patients lifestlyes, diets, and exercise according to body types (doshas), body systems, and energy.

Ayurvedic concepts have gained popularity with
Americans only in the past decade, but it is growing rapidly. With an intent to promote quality of life and increase life span, these techniques may be worth looking into.

Ayurvedic ideas affect diet and habits and can usually be applied while using conventional medications.
