February 20, 2009, Newsletter Issue #204: St. Johnīs wort - Cautions

Tip of the Week

Donīt mix St. Johnīs wort with Certain Medications:

St. Johnīs-wort can increase the effects of antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Luvox. This can cause weakness, fatigue, or incoherence.

St. Johnīs wort can also reduce the effectiveness of cardiac medication. This herb can have a useful place in your treatment life, just use it with caution and donīt use it internally if you are using antidepressants or cardiac medication.

St. Johnīs Wort may also make the birth control pill less effective if you are taking both.
