June 18, 2010, Newsletter Issue #271: Sweeter then Sugar

Tip of the Week

Because Honey is TWICE as sweet as sugar, the desired sweetness can be achieved with less, resulting in lower caloric intake.

Honey is a good source of energy at 63 calories per tablespoon. Honey is more than sweet, It is also a source of riboflavin, thiamin, ascorbic acid, and varying amounts of minerals.

Honey also contains elements which affect the browning of baked goods using honey as the sugar. I especially like to add it to my flapjack recipes. Just a little increases the browning action tremendously.
