July 16, 2010, Newsletter Issue #275: Preparing Beans

Tip of the Week

Beans are an excellent food that should be part of every healthy diet.

In one cheap package of dried beans you get proteins, complex carbohydrates, soluble fiber, and important vitamins and minerals.

Cooking beans:

First look through the beans for any rocks or foreign objects that may not have been removed before packaging.

Wash and soak them according to package instructions. When cooking after soaking, add 1/2 a fresh apple or a raw potato to the cooking water. Remove the apple or potato after cooking. Adding the apple or potato affects the gas and misery associated with eating beans. I canīt promise you it will remove the gas entirely, but it should relieve some gas pain.

For a complete high protein, low fat meal, combine beans with a grain such as rice or corn.
