August 6, 2010, Newsletter Issue #278: Alternate Nostril Breathing

Tip of the Week

Breathwork can help you change your focus and help calm your mind. Breathwork oxygenates the brain and the body, bringing in energy. Alternate nostril breathing is particularly good for calming the mind. Conditions such as anxiety/stress, insomnia, depression, PMS have responded positively to alternate nostril breathing. Begin by gently exhaling. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale, slowly, steadily and deeply, through your left nostril. Then, close your left nostril with your right ring finger, releasing your thumb, and exhale slowly and fully through your right nostril. Next, inhale through your right nostril, slowly and steadily, and then close the right nostril with the right thumb again. Release the ring finger and exhale through the left nostril. This completes the FIRST round. You can start with ten rounds and gradually increase it. You can play around and switch sides and techniques. Commencing the inhalations through the right nostril is more energizing. This technique is appealing because it´s easy to do anytime or anyplace. If you´re at work and stressed, you can go into the bathroom and purify your nervous system on the spot!
