Researchers at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor found an average of 278 mg of sodium per quart in water from homes with water softeners. The softeners add sodium to water to remove calcium and magnesium. Given that Americans consume an average of 2.5 quarts of water a day, the sodium in softened water can amount to 695 mg a day. That's a significant chunk of the recommended daily intake of 2400 mg for the average person.
