Important Timing for Women to Stop Smoking?

Can efforts to stop smoking be influenced by where you are in your menstral cycle? It would seem so.

Women who quit during the first half of their menstrual cycle seem to have the edge over those who stop during the second half.

Withdrawal symptoms such as depression, anxiety and irritability were less severe for women in a test who quit between days 1 and 14 of their menstrual cycle compared to those who quit between 14 and the start of their next period.

The test participants averaged 38 years in age, had been smoking from 19 to 20 years, smoked about 20 cigarettes a day and had tried to quit three times. They all attended group counseling sessions about the benefits of stopping.

Quitting produces withdrawal symptoms similar to those of premenstrual symptoms.
